Stagger Start Day

At our school the kindergartners really have two first days.  The first week each kid goes once for their stagger start day and then the next week they actually start.  Emily's stagger day was Tuesday and she has not been happy about being stuck home with mommy ever since.   This also causes a bit of a debate regarding when to wear the special first day of school outfit.  I decided the only real solution to this problem was to have two special outfits.  Here is the first one.
I used the Oliver and S Music Class Skirt pattern and paired it with a ready to wear tee that she already had. The fabric is from an older Joann's line.  It has red smiling apples and book worms wearing glasses on a bright yellow background.  Not really our usually color pallet but we are glasses lovers around here.  I made her a size 6 with no alterations unless you count adding ric-rac to the seams.  The fit is great as in the length and as always the pattern went together beautifully.  Honestly, I think anyone who is thinking of writing patterns (I am not) should get a few Oliver and S patterns just to understand how instructions should be.
Here is the after picture.  She had a great time and is so ready.  Truth be told so am I.  I love my kids dearly and do my best to respect the choices others make with their kids but I am glad mine go to public school.

Paris

We were in Paris for a week which was unreal and will be getting several blog posts in the coming month.  Then we got back and the jet lag was no joke or maybe we were just exhausted who knows but either way.  Then school started except that Emily only went one day this week.  So I'm still here.  Still want to do some remaking next month and promising some real posts again starting Saturday.
I hadn't really meant to take a blog break but I guess that just happens sometimes.

Rock Paper ...

Last year I participated in a number of Sew Weekly challenges and followed all of them.  I learned a lot and was impressed by all of the women who participated.  That said one of my favorite things to watch for were the women who would make dresses out of wild and crazy prints just bc they liked them.  I mean who says a grown woman can't have a dress with playing cards, flamingos, or whatever other print she happens to like.  That lead me to purchase the David and Goliath Rock is Dead fabric that I had been eying for years.  I got 3 yards for a knit dress washed the fabric and then the same thing happened that often does.  I sat it aside and didn't get around to actually you know making the dress.  That is until now.
This was another remake.  I used Simplicity 2443 the same pattern I used to make my fake lace dress last summer.  I took these pictures on what was probably my puffiest day of the month but the fit is still pretty good.  If I do it again out of 1 way stretch fabric I will add a little to the front bodice but other then that I'm pleased.
I added a good bit to the back of this one.  It is still a racer back but doesn't cut in nearly as far as the original pattern.  It does still require a racer back bra though.
Here is a close up of the fabric.  I love the print and thickness but even with a ballpoint needle it got some tiny holes during the sewing process.  Grumble.  Oh well.  I've worn it twice and the second time someone told me my style reminded him of the ladies in Greenwich Village.  Hope it was meant as a compliment.  Regardless I'm taking it as one.  In many ways this dress fall right into my summer mom uniform of a comfy knit dress and cute shoes.  I mean what's not to love spend all day in something that feels a bit like a night gown while people tell you you look great.

Hope everyone is still considering some remakes in September.  I know I'm excited.  I'll be figuring out how to set up a linky party and would love to either have some guests post or at least be able to link to some posts on the topic of remakes so please let me know if your interested.

Nerdy Stitching

When I was pregnant with Elijah I spent quite a lot of time on modified bed rest.  What that means is you can recline on the couch but you best not move around unless it is necessary.  Much better then full bed rest for sure but still boring as all get out.  During this time I did a lot of cross stitching I mean really a lot not juts like one or two things but a crazy number of kits and what not.  I made one more thing for a baby shower after he was born and then I was done.  Well at least done until a few months ago.

It all started innocently enough as most things do.  Neil and I were watching Firefly again and I decided I wanted to cross stitch the theme song.  I did a search on etsy found this pattern and was good to go.
This one had quite a few half stitches, a bunch of colors, and took a bit of time but it was fun to make and is now framed and hanging in our dining room.

Now as etsy searches go I did not just find the one thing I was looking for I also found a whole bunch of things that I had no idea I was looking for like this wee little stitches shop.  I only want to make about half of her patterns.  So far I have done the princesses and the Futerama cast (they are on her blog).  I've also started the Drs Who for my dad for Christmas but will have to put it up tomorrow since he is coming to visit.
These both still need to be framed but I'll wait and have Neil take them with the Drs.  I don't like to take things bc it makes me sad to know what framing costs so we have a deal in regards to that.  I've also decided a prefer 16ct.  The princesses are on 14 and the just seem a little too big to me.  I also like the natural fabric as it doesn't show the little spots that can come from sitting on our couch for weeks.  I soaked the girls in oxy though and they came out just fine.  I think nerdy cross stitch patterns has to be one of my favorite things about etsy.
