I few more hits and misses

I'm trying to stay on top of the cooking around here or well we are trying.  If I do t he planning Neil doesn't mind doing the cooking.  In theory he doesn't mind the planning either but in practice that doesn't go so well.

These were OK and we ate them and the leftovers but I have no plans to make them again.

Yummy yummy yummy!  We added mushrooms and used chicken broth instead of veggie broth but man was it good.

We've done this avocado pasta before.  I love it, the kids don't like it so much but will eat it so every now and then I put it on the menu.  We do add a bunch of parm cheese though since we are not vegans.

blue and red

I think I've said this before but my friend Meredith gave me a whole bunch of fabric last summer.  I always love when people give me free fabric but there also always seem to be a few challenging pieces in any set.  In this case Meredith pulled out two pieces of wild red and aqua blue fabric and starting talking about how she thought they would make a pretty dress.  All I could think was that I would never have bought either much less put the wild prints together even if they were from the same collection.  Well as it turns out she was right and I was wrong.  I made her older daughter a birthday dress using those two fabrics and by the time it was finished I almost kept it for Emily.
This is a feliz dress from Sewing Clothes Kids Love.  I added I little bit of jumbo ric-rac in the front and with ric-rac around the bottom.
Usually I'm not a fan of working with plaid fabric but it turns out the lines made sewing the elastic casing so much easier.
Here is a close up of the front.  Both mama and daughter love the dress so I'm glad I didn't have time to whip up something else and keep it for myself.

a few more dinners

As a family we are starting to find some recipes we really like which was the goal and is very exciting for me.  We were at the beach last week (pictures to come soon I promise) but before we left we did a good bit of home cooking.

Elijah still says he wants to be a chef so he helped me make these meatballs.  He did not love putting his hands in the meat to squish it together but did his best.  It was really helpful to have two people when we were making the actual balls and dredging them in flour.

We used some of the meatballs to make this dish.  It was yummy and pretty easy to make according to Neil who did the cooking.

We all loved these so much.

We changed this one up a bit by using leftover grilled sausage but it still turned out tasty.

So there  you have it.  Next up beach pictures.  I'm also working on Christmas skirts for Emily and her friends Abby and Ella.  Plus several projects that never got blogged.

summer break

Well it seems as if I've taken a blog break.  I really didn't plan too but life has been full and we've been enjoying some much needed family time.  Here are some highlights of the last bit.
Emily finished Kindergarten.  I didn't make her a new outfit for this but she did wear an outfit that I made her so that's a win.
We inherited a guinea pig.  One of or swim coaches was moving cross country from grad school and couldn't take Muffin with her so we took her.  She is fitting in well and the kids just love her.
I made Emily another pair of vintage pjs this time using the super cute bloomer bottoms.
Elijah swan the 2K at NC Open Water this year.  He said it was hard.
Elijah finished 5th grade and is off to middle school in just a few weeks now.
He also went to sleep away camp again.  Not surprisingly he spent most of his time swimming there as well.
Our swim teams pool finally got finished a opened.  It was a long wait but totally worth while.  Remember most of these kids swam outdoors in a heated pool through the winter.
Emily was just a little bit excited.
So I've got a few projects in the works I'm sure I'll post about them eventually but in the mean time I hope you all have a happy summer.
